The Muscadet Wine Region: A Historic Winegrowing Area Experiencing a Revival

Located around the city of Nantes, the Muscadet wine region stretches from the Loire estuary and the Ancenis area through the vineyards of Clisson and Vallet, all the way to Lake Grand-Lieu.

Viticulture in the Pays Nantais dates back to Antiquity. Winegrowing continued to develop throughout the Middle Ages, before expanding significantly thanks to Nantes’ maritime trade and Dutch wine merchants. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine and Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire were among the first French wine appellations to receive official recognition in 1936.

Melon de Bourgogne is the region’s signature grape variety. It produces fresh, elegant white wines, often characterised by subtle saline notes, traditionally paired with fish and seafood. Particularly responsive to soil characteristics, this grape variety showcases the region’s remarkable geological diversity, including granite, gneiss, orthogneiss, schist and gabbro.

Long renowned for its fresh, approachable white wines, Muscadet is now experiencing a genuine revival. A renewed focus on individual terroirs, extended ageing on lees (sur lie) and the recognition of specific geographical designations are helping to elevate wine quality and reshape the region’s reputation.

Understanding the Main Wine Appellations in Muscadet

The Pays Nantais wine region is home to four Muscadet Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs), alongside several other appellations that contribute to the diversity of local wine production.

  • Muscadet AOP covers the largest geographical area, encompassing approximately 1,300 hectares of vineyards. It produces fresh, light and fruity white wines designed to be enjoyed young.
  • Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOP is the historic heart and main production area of the Nantes wine region, covering approximately 4,500 hectares. Aged on lees (sur lie), its wines are structured and mineral-driven, with depth and ageing potential that vary according to the terroir.
  • Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu AOP extends over approximately 230 hectares around Lake Grand-Lieu, southwest of Nantes. Shaped by the interplay between land, lake and oceanic influences, the appellation produces delicate, silky wines with floral aromas, sometimes complemented by iodine and saline notes.
  • Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire AOP is the smallest of the regional Muscadet appellations, covering approximately 150 hectares. Its soils of gneiss, granite, mica schist and greenstone produce complex, powerful wines that retain remarkable freshness.
  • Coteaux d’Ancenis AOP is located around Ancenis, between the Pays Nantais and Anjou wine regions. It differs from the Muscadet appellations in both its grape varieties and wine styles, also producing fresh, fruity red and rosé wines.
  • Gros Plant du Pays Nantais AOP is primarily located in the western part of the wine region, under the influence of an oceanic climate. Made from the Folle Blanche grape variety, its white wines are characterised by lively acidity and distinctive iodine notes. They are traditionally paired with fish, shellfish and seafood.
  • The Muscadet Crus Communaux (Communal Designations) represent the pinnacle of Muscadet wine production and reflect the region’s move towards premium wines. In 2026, the region is completing the recognition process for ten communal designations: Clisson, Gorges, Le Pallet, Goulaine, Château-Thébaud, Mouzillon-Tillières, Monnières-Saint-Fiacre, La Haye-Fouassière, Vallet and Champtoceaux. Produced from carefully selected vineyard plots, with restricted yields and extended ageing on lees, these wines express the distinctive characteristics of each terroir and offer excellent ageing potential.
